Would they have still been hand punching the last two digits in the date on the dies as late as 1944? The placement of the 44 on these 4 coins is slightly different on each one and it looks like on a couple of them that the bottom serif of the last 4 could have been caused by a broken punch. The last one looks to be repunched, yet all of them seem to have the doubling on the horizontal bar in common. Also, same punch for the S on all of them?

Hi Steve...really hard for me to tell since I don't know the deign or series. It appears it could be different positions, but since you have differing die states it appears it could be that as well. They could also have hand punched the dates into the master dies, thus all the resulting coins could be from two or three different masters - three positions - one with a doubled lower serif, another with a broken lower serif, and yet another that's more or less normal. Just a guess.

That sounds like a reasonable guess. More reasonable than punching every die. Any idea on how many dies a hub can make? The mintage is 58M for this coin. I was guessing somewhere between 200 and 500 dies would have been used.
