This coin looks like it might be a little of both. I am not familiar with many of the different 37 DDO's. Does this look like it might be one of the dies, or just strike doubling? Thanks in advance.

John....I can't quite tell from your photos, but it looks like it might be a combination of both. There are a few class 2 doubled dies for 1937, and there is also the master doubling...more specifically on the 937 of the date. I see areas that look like strike doubling on LIBERTY in your pics, but portions of the motto look like it might be class 2 with a light spread. I know it's not much help, but that's all I can tell from your pics.

This post may have been one of the posts that was lost. I was looking at the same type of dilemma this weekend on a 1937P. DDO or machine doubling? Or both? Here are my pics

That is the same die rollmeupabe, but yours is much cleaner and an earlier die state. Nice coin- Looking at yours I feel better about mine being a DDO. Thanks for the post.

rollmeupabe: That looks like machine doubling to me on the Motto and on the Date. I've got several examples of machine doubling coins I set aside for educational purposes and to keep them off Ebay... LOL The corners of the details on the coin should be affected with a notch or a wider detail verically or horizontally. I found a DDR that had 1/2 Machine doubling and the other 1/2 a doubled die. I don't have an image of that one worked up right now, but it looks like a project to work on soon. Got to find it first. The left half is machine doubled and the right half is a doubled die. The machine doubling kills the value except for educational purposes.
Make sure to open images as wide as possible as they get smaller on the reduced size setting on the upper right side of your page. A few examples of machine doubling:

The doubled die letters are larger/wider/split, where as the machine doubled letter/number/mintmark remain the same size, just distorted. Hope this helps.

Thanks Coop. these are fabulous pictures. I was thinking machine doubling but hoping DDO. The one image that threw me off was the 7 in the date. It appears to have doubling on both sides of the coin and I did not think it could be machine doubling on both sides.

There is master die doubling that affects the 7 of the date, and there are some minor doubled dies that affect primarily the 3 and 7 of the date. What you have could be either, but the majority of the doubling displayed in your images is machine doubling.
