Saw this and just thought it was interesting. I hadn't seen die scratches in a circular pattern before. The only scratches on this 1982D are in bays 4,5,6,7, and 8. Must have been something on the statue that needed cleaned up.

These are called "concentric" die scratches and are present on a number of different dies. You'll see this term used in the marker information for die varieties on coppercoins.com when it warrants.

So much terminology to learn. It's got to be very easy to tell when a person has just started collecting compaired to someone that's been at this for a while. Thanks for all the help and I hope everyone can put up with my questions until I can soak some of this in.

I guess I should define "concentric"...

It's a term meaning "around center" - this is used only in describing how the scratches appear, it doesn't really have anything to do with how they were made.
