Bruce: Those designations are for the anomolies that are attributed to each variety.
The 1MM is a first 1 for Cent and MM for mintmark.
The 1DO is a first 1 for Cent and DO for a Doubled Die Obverse.
The 1DR is a first 1 for Cent and DR for Doubled Die Reverse
We use those as a designation of the denimination and anamoly. With this formula you can use an excel page and be able to sort by year, mintmark, denimination and designation of anomoly. I guess we take it for granted as we use it all the time. It is a formula that works quicker than an explination of what the coin is. A BIE is an error not a variety. It is a break in the die that forms between the BE on LIBERTY caused by die clashes that break or chip the obverse die and slowly get larger till it stops. Starts small and progresses to enlarge as more coins are struck wearing on a weakened state on the die.

See on the image where the left wheat inside line hits LIBERTY? When a die clash happens it can weaken that area and on wheat cents they used the dies till they died. So we not more of the BIE cents on wheat coins because the design weakens the obverse die.
On a Book, I would check out Chucks book on the Home page. But other information can be found reading the chat and if it is not answered ask questions like you did.

Bruce,
I guess Coop answered most of your questions. We do have sections on the site that address some of these areas. Under the header of the site, there are links to include faqs etc. In addition, the new site update will have all this information in an easier to access format.
As far as a book goes, Coop is also correct in that this book can really help a collector with questions such as you have. Chuck does not have any books to sell since they are now availlable in some book stores and the publisher controls some of that stuff.
We are in the second edition of the book. I do have some first edition copies available. If you are interested in obtaining one, email me directly at bobp@coppercoins.com.
