Hi all
Back in 1985 I put a lot of old foreign copper coins in 2x2 That must of had a p v c film. What is the safest way to remove the p f c and save my coins? And is the quality of the copper in foreign coins as high as our old cents?

This can be a toughie Bruce. If you have the green gunk that PVC can leave on coins, I would try acetone to remove it. Acetone will not remove the patina, and does a good job of desolving the gunk. I would also try goo-gone to give the coin a final bath. Remember not to rub the coin as any grit on the surface of the coin can scratch it bad. I ususally use a Q-tip to blot and lift the crud form the coin, let it soak for a bit, then use fingertips to clean it further. Then again...every one has their own way.
As far as copper quality in foreign coins, it all depends on the country. A lot of times, the planchets are made elsewhere and the coin may even be struck elsewhere.
I would vernture to say that our members Robert & Smed are more able to answer that question.
