Lincoln cent count.

I'm looking to have it done around the end of the summer, probably September. I would need at least 20-25 people to make it worthwhile.

Any stipulations on how we get the coins? From banks? from stores? As long as it isn't trying to get $50 worth of cents in transactions, I would be in for it.

Most definately, just go to the bank and ask for $50 face, however it comes...doesn't have to be in any special form, and it can be all from a single trip. Just 5,000 coins, no matter how they come.

You could get as lucky as a couple of the people who did the count for me in 1998 - one ended up with a sealed bag of 1968S cents for the asking, and another ended up with an old canvas bag that was nearly half wheaties...just by going to the bank and asking for a "$50 bag".

They can come in boxes, paper wrappers, shotgun wrappers, plastic shrink wrap, or loose...doesn't matter.

And no, you don't have to keep them either. Get them, sort them, get the data, and give them back to the bank. With a good technique it can be done in a couple of evenings sitting in front of the TV. I will teach the best technique I have found in the pamphlet I am writing for the volunteers.

Sounds good to me. Searching a bunch of cents like that can be fun and you never know what you might find.

I have started a count with 829 cents and have some preliminary results. These are coins obtained from change around the Chicago area.

1. 2001 D 94
2. 2000 D 59
3. 1999 D 40
4. 1998 D 30
5. 1995 D 30

I have 14 1982. I do not know what the characteristics of the 7 varieties are, but I noticed some are nearly 100% red and others are in bad shape. Other interesting finds: 1936 (1) and 1935 S (1). 1970-S (1). I forgot to look if it was the small date. I found 4 1959's all memorial reverse! I just found out my daughter has about 500 cents stashed somewhere so I will update the results soon.

I've got a box of pennies sitting on the floor in my office. When I check them, I'll track the results. Wouldn't it be easier if we could enter the results in an online database?

I agree Art, but Chuck hasnt given the go ahead yet and I am just offering the top 5 results of a quick count. It seems that Illinois is the recipient of mostly Denver cents. That seems to be the case for quarters also.

The information will most definately be in a database, and the results will be used for an array of things on the site. The problem is having enough different people involved from enough different areas of the country to make the project worthwhile. So far it isn't.

I am not sure if this endeavor was completed or not but I would be happy to help. I live in north Jersey, about 15 miles outside Manhatten. This reminds me of a dig performed at a civil war camp which was active for only a one year period. By looking at the coins found in the dig they could estimate what was in their pockets. Joe
