Bob, I have an album from 1920-"date", and am going to use goo-gone on them, as they are very "scroungy" How long would you reccomend? Some of the crud is almost like asphalt! The coins are g-4 to F-12, at best, so an "experiment gone wrong", will not affect them!

Dick,
I would recommend leaving them in the Goo-Gone for about an hour or so and see how that works. You will need to do a little cleaning with the Q-Tip. The real heavy stuff will take a bit longer.
Drew...You can get Goo-Gone just about anywhere like Lowe's, Home depot, or even some grocery stores. I will post a pic of what the bottle looks like in just a few minutes.
OK...here's what the stuff looks like. Excuse the blurry pics

Great thread. I love finds like these.
My two cents worth...
Acetone is safe for long soaks (few days) BUT don't let it evaporate over the coin or it will put all the dissolved problems right back into the coin.
Goo Gone is great stuff BUT I have noticed that on coins I have used Goo Gone on years ago I am noticing a blueish/reddish toning on the areas of the coin the Goo Gone was used on. Almost the same effect that MS70 leaves on a coin. So be careful if you have a high dollar coin and want it encapsulated someday.
Just my observations of course.

I tried G-G for several hours, but little,or no effect. I also let the coins set for 24 hours in Palmolive licquid, with OXY.and no difference. The next thing will be Mineral oil. If the crud hasn't loosened up by yhat time, I'm going to "cook them, but with a lot less Soda! There has to be a way. I'm not worried about the coins, because they grade G-4 to F-15, so not to worry. That album cost me $0.99, plus S&H. I'll tet you know what comes out. BTW, I copy each post, and reply, before sending it, because I have lost several on the kick-back.

John,
I have never had a coin change to the reddish/bluish toning you refer to. I have let them sit in Goo-Gone for a week with no affect to the patina. Either way, I agree with your recommendation of being careful with high value coins. There is no way to tell what kind of treatments they may have had previously.

It didn’t turn out as well as I hoped,
When it was in the acetone it looked like the ink was breaking down
It looks like the stain will have to stay on this one.
At least until someone invents a miniature steam cleaner

Yep, looks like some of it will stay. If you do more the cheek will have lost its patina.
