I mentioned in the chat room that I was asked to go thru a lady's father's coin collection. There were alot of nice coins in it, nothing rare but alot of relatively common silver, some in mint state condition. I saved the Lincoln cents for last. There were three rolls. I found one of those pesky 1956-D 1S9 cents in there. It is virtually all red, but has some really bad pvc green spots on it. One is a small circle that covers the entire vertical line of the "T" in CENT. Is there any way to get rid of these spots?

I believe that pure acetone might help here. It is well worth a try in my opinion- Good luck.

There is a way to get rid of the spots, but it depends on exactly how much they are into the surface, exactly what it is, and how big it is. Acetone tends to put a purple color on red coins, I don't use it. Goo-Gone will not alter the color of the coin at all.
In most cases with ingrained spots I have had no luck at all. I know it can be done, I've seen it done...I just don't know what was used.

One particular spot is sort of crystallized on the surface. Its amazing that out of 150 or so cents, thats the only one that had this problem. Thanks for the tips, guys. I will do something.

Garry: I would do nothing till you are sure what will work. Try your process on a similiar common coin with the same problem first. That way you don't ruin a collectable.

Thats a good idea Coop. The coin still has some value in the condition its in. The problem does not affect the mint mark area. Its kind of funny that I ran across it. I have 3 of my own. I might offer the lady some money for this one.
