Robert,
I have many ancient coins that I have collected over the years. Most have been from uncleaned lots from ebay. It is indeed a very fascinating glimpse into history. I tried for a long time to find a good reference book for Greek, Roman, and Byzantyne coins, and I finally found a very in-depth book on Roman coins. It is called "The Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins". It is a complete guide to the history, types and values of Roman Imperial Coinage dating from 27 B.C. through 498 A.D. The author is David Van Meter.
If you want to get into collecting those coins, I would do an internet search on this book as I can not remember where I purchased it from. It really gives you a detailed look at these great coins. There are other reference books on the Greek and Byzantyne coins, but I do not have them.
