In a Coin World letter to the editor, a reader asserts that there are "enough cents produced already to last for a very long time". in light of higher copper prices there has been talk about stopping cent production becuase it will likely cost more than a cent to make a cent.

What do you think? Are there enough cents in jars, purses, coffee cans, etc to last us a while?

My thought is that if hey stop making them the won't be in circulation long people will probably start hoarding them. What type of coins did remain in circulation, of any significance, after being discontinued. If that did happen how would we be able to pay for a 99 cent burger Laughing

I think there are plenty of cents out there to preclude having to make any more. Billions and billions are just plain not being used (including the 50,000 or so I have here!
However, I feel that getting folks to take them out of their jars and such would be hard to do without some sort of incentive.

I remember a few years back some banks were offering 55 Cents per roll just to get some back. I think the stratigy worked, but I saving my BU just in case they do pull them. A lot of junk coins in circulation. The more of them hoarded just makes the BU ones price go up even higher.

I remember that. Sometime in the mid 70's I think... I had $30 in rolled cents and got $33 for it. A virtual fortune for me as a teen.

Robert,
I'd say if they do stop making cents, then we would run out real quick since everyone would start hoarding them. I've buying from 1959-2006 not becuase of the "going to stop the cents" but becuase I would like to have them plus its something to do. Now if it did look like they were going to stop making em then I'd buy whatever I could from the banks. Smile Smile
