From Coin World, Sep 15 issue.

Cuba was Spanish until 1898 (Spanish-American War). After Teddy Roosevelt charged San Juan Hill, US coins circulated in Cuba along with old Spanish coins (I assume reales).

In 1914, Cuba asked the US to make cions, which were designed by Barber and struch in Philadelphia. Cuban coins were struck in Philly until 1960 when Castro gave Czechoslovakia the contract.

And brass centavos were struck for Cuba in 1943, so they could be considered copper coins!
