1968-S MM?

I've been staring at this for 15 minutes from every angle and there's just something odd about it. It doesn't match any of the 3 RPM's. The top of the S has the shelf look for MMD but inside the loop, where I show with an arrow, it's rounded. Kind of brain dead on this right now so if anyone can tell me what I'm looking at I would be eternally grateful.

Don't be sorry Dick. the MD answer is fine and dandy. I just couldn't convince myself and needed the persuasion. I've seen/had lots and lots of RPM's and have seen tons of mechanical doublings, but like I said i was just brain dead on this or stubborn. One or the other.

I agree with Dick in that there is nothing more than MD on the mintmark. I also think you might be looking a little too hard for anomalies on some of these coins. In this case, even if it had been an RPM, it probably would have been too minor to list.

Rock, I find myself doing the very samew thing! Eventually, I give up, and go to the next one. I have become more "tolerant", in that not every coin has to be "something"! Now I just look at the markers, and if there are more than one that check exactly, then I consider the timing of "when" the coin was struck: before the example, or maybe afterwards. The other marks, ie, gouges scratches, dings, etc, and the general appearance of the wear on the surface. Is it heavily worn, well worn, "been around a bit", or is it AU, or even BU? Then I can evaluate the coin as to when it MIGHT have been struck, in relation with the example. Complicated? Crazy, mixed-up? Could be, but whatever works.....

Bob, you're absolutley right. I tend to over do it when its late and I'm over tired. Sometimes it gets hard to resolve in my mind the thing I am seeing. Also, when I first started in this hobby, I rushed thru my coins. After a couple of years of reading, discussing and trying to learn, I realized I was losing a lot of collectible varieties in my haste. When I slowed way down I found a lot more including new discovered DDO's about 3 years ago. But as you stated, I tend to over do it there too. Thank you Bob and Dick for your insights and balance. There is no guarantee that I'm not going to post another pic of some dumb thing unrelated to any kind of true variety though. I've only been doing this off and on for 10 years and I've barely scratched the surface in knowing and understanding it. Thanks for your patience.

It is certainly understandable that after quick searching for a number of years, that you may have missed a few varieties. I have done that many times.
I do not want to discourage you from searching as deep into these things as you want. What may not be listable, may still be collectible to you. We certainly don't mind you posting pics, because as we have said numerous times, this is educational as well as fun.
You will find as time goes on that you will acquire an eye for fast searching and still being able to see everything. That being said, we all miss a few occasionally.

That's actually not even machine doubling. It's just a normal part of the mintmark punch.

Rock, you say you have been doing this for about 10 years! I haven't been doing it for 10 months, yet! I have to agree with both Chuck, and Bob, that we tend to try to get too deep in our searches. I do, and have found myself trying to find what is NIOT there! So the only thing I would say at this time is, we should "Slow down, and enjoy the view"!
