Hello to all..
Just arrived here at copper coins (new to coin collecting as well) but have been checking the site out for quite sometime & all I can say is, Great site.!
Anyhow, I found this Lincoln a few days ago while going thru some circulated rolls, I didn't find this particular variety listed in the encyclopedia here at copper coins, so im worndering if it is a DDO? Not the best picture in the world! (can try to do a better pic if needed) but most of what appears to be doubling can be seen on the date.. Hope I placed this question in the right forum..??
Anyhow, its great to be here.!
Thanks,CP

CP, welcome to the forum!
From where I can see, it looks like you might try a little more lighting, and ask for more opinions, because I can be wrong, but it looks like you might have a goodie!

You have machine doubling...a normal die bounced and created doubling on the coin during the strike. This is very common and is not worth any premium value. It is not a doubled die, which would indicate the design on the die is doubled.
How to tell the difference....machine doubkling is flattened down, shelf-like, it takes up part of the normal shape of the letters it doubles, and it does not have any notching at the corners, which is the prime indicator of a true hub doubled die.
Doubled dies have extra thickness to the letters where the second misaligned hubbing pressed the letters into the die an additional time, and it has notches at the corners of the letters. This happens due to the same effect as laying two same-size sheets of paper together then misaligning them slightly by sliding the top sheet diagonally a little...two of the corners of the overall shape will develop "notches". Try it and you'll see.

I guess a new cammera is defenitely on the Christmas list this year.! I couldn't get a better pic.! But FWIW,the tail of the "2" is what had me thinking it could possibly be a DDO.. I do see the shelf like appearance on the '72 now.. Thanks for clearing that up..
BTW,the paper alighnment trick is great advice.! I also Looked at several "great pics" here on the site & I noticed that none of the DDO's have that "squarish" (shelf like) look to the doubling.. Very helpful info.!
Thanks,C.P

1972 P,D,S Have a few dies made from a master hub that has a doubled die on. Because of this about 25 % (+-) of the coins from that year and mintmark have it. Notcied on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD on the motto. It was classified as a DDO, but found to be a Master hub error. Some of these are sold on Ebay, but no premium attached as they are common.

Coop, I checked with the photo on site, and "thought" I could see the "split tails" on the "2". I guess my MD is getting worse. It is nice to see that several of you folks came along to help define the coin. Sorry about the wrong call.

Coop, i missed the call on the one today, but I made the right call on the ebay shot-gun-roll of cents, with VDB on the end. May be a 1909 there. Maybe even two! I'll let you know when they get here. They are coming from Fontana, CA. I could go pick them up by hand, but they have to come by mail. I just bought a 57 proof set from the same seller, "sealed" envelope. The price was right, ( $31.00). I haven't gone after the mail yet, so I din't know what it looks like.
Later: Checked the mail, and 1957 proof set here. Opened the seal, checked the set of coins, and find them intact, clean, and spotless! They are very fine looking coins. The feanklin is choice, with FBL! It alone, paid for the whole set!
