Does this look like die doubling, maybe die # 2?
The spot on it looks like it might be ink, if this is a double die
How can I remove the ink without damaging the coin?

Hi Drew,
You definitely have die -002 (1941P-1DO-002) Congrats on a very nice find. As far as removing the ink, I don't know of anything to do that with. I would not attempt to clean it unless someone else has a suggestion that will not damage the patina,

A dip in acetone may do the trick and will not harm the coin.

Yep it's 1DO-OO2, neat find.

Try acetone, if that's ink it will get it off. Don't scrub or rub with anything, if it is tough to get off try soaking it longer or spraying right on the stain with one of those plastic acetone bottles. It won't hurt the coin.

I tried the acetone and some of it came off,
Do you think that it would be safe if I put a little acetone in a
small glass jar and let it soak for a couple of days?

Nice Coin. If you do soak it again I wouldn't do it for avery long period.

Acetone will not hurt a coin and I have let one sit in the stuff for about five days without any adverse affects.

BJ,

Didn't know that! Thank's for the info. I was under the impression that all cleaners were bad when it came to preserving the patina. Thank's

I found this same variety last night. It is the best example out of the 4 that I have. There is a small bit of corrosion on the new example, but it is on the reverse and doesn't affect the doubling on the obverse.
D42....if you do attempt to remove the ink stain with acetone, please let us know how it comes out..OK??

D42, hi! I have heard that you should use the pure, or professional Acetone, rather than the more common "Nail polish remover. It does have some additives. I don't use it. It leaves an un-natural "glow on the coin, (Canadian cent, in this csae).

Bob,
I am going to take it out later today or tomorrow and see if any more of the ink came off
I’ll post another picture of it this weekend.
I did find another 1941 that has doubling on it, but I’m not sure if it’s die one or die two
It does have a little dirt by the letters but there are no stains on the obv, so I’m trying a wet Q-tip to remove some of the dirt. I’ll post this one later this evening ( Should I post it here or under a new post ? ).
And Dick
The acetone that I’m using I picked up at the hardware store and it’s pure acetone.

Drew,

A little bit of gunk left is still ok.

Show a before and after photo.

This is another 1941
This one had dirt around the date and lettering I almost missed it
But I spotted the top of the B in Liberty; I started removing the dirt with a Q-tip
with a little bar soap on it. Here’s what it looks like so far, I still have a way to go
The hard part will be removing the dirt from the inside of the O, D and E
I don’t know which die it is ( die 1 or die 2 ).

Drew

The newest pictures are that of Die # 001. Congrats as that one is a little tougher to locate. Very cool. Laughing

By the way...you need to buy yourself some Goo-Gone. You can soak your coins in that forever, and it will help loosen up all the gunk between the letters. You can then use a Q-Tip or a soft toothbrush to clean it some more....just don't scrub too hard. I have used Goo-Gone for years and it has always worked wonderfully.
