I'm posting this coin for a friend, and I've noted a few details I find interesting on this coin. I suspect this was struck on a damaged planchet, but I'd like to hear your opinions--thanks! Very Happy

Here's the full-size image (far right shows edge of coin):

Kurt, that looks every bit like the cut a pair of bolt-cutters make: a double-bevel. That is the impression I get from the edge view. Post mint damage.

Dick, well perhaps you're right--and I'm way off! Cool I've posted a few observations here that kept me wondering. Confused

In any case, my friend is sending me this coin, so I'll examine this one in more detail.
And thanks again! This is why I ask--because I'm often wrong if I simply go by my first impressions--especially w/error coins.

Kurt, no problem! I am but one of many who have "Walked in those same shoes". It is a learning process! I like your method of step-by-step analysis. I am much too new at this, to be proficient, yet. Maybe in a 100 years?

That's a naturally occurring, ragged fissure in the edge of the coin. A genuine planchet error.

Mike, thanks for that confirmation!
I had my suspicions when I saw the rough metal within the edge, and now that I have the coin here, it's plainly obvious it was not cut perpendicular to the edge, because there are rough layers that run parallel to the surface of the coin. I would guess these irregular layers were produced when the planchet stock was rolled out? Confused Btw, now that I'm looking closer, I can see lamination problems above CANADA. I'll take new pics.
