An interesting die variety: Newfoundland 1940 1c

Here's an interesting die variety from Newfoundland. This is called the 1940 "re-engraved date" because a single reverse die (of 6 total) was reworked to embolden the date and other devices. While the date is most obvious, if you click on the photo below, you may notice areas of reworking on NEWFOUNDLAND and ONE CENT. Since this variety appears involves a re-worked die (rare for 20c. coins), the total run can be calculated from the total mintage of 300,000/6 reverse dies = 50,000 "re-engraved" coins.

Kurt, thanks for the explanation, and photo. I know nothing about Newfoundland, other than I once contacted Argencia, to have them relay a position report, and ETA to Houston, early in '51. We were headed to Texas for a skeet-shoot competition, and I couldn't make contact with Houston, but Argencia said they read them Loud, and clear. So I asked them to relay our position, and ETA. Thae I asked them what their QTH was, and they told me, "Argencia"... I said, Where is that? What is your QTH?. That is when they said they were in Newfoundland, and I still was totally confused, and asked where is that? Then I found out it is part of Canada. I was stationed in China Lake, CA., then, Part of Project Atlaas. I was the Maint. electronics technician, and had several different aircraft to maintain, and modify for the "sand-crabs", aka civilian sientists, and engineers. I spent an interesting four years there. That was my only "shore duty". The rest was sea duty.

Dick, that's quite a story! Nice to be able to hop around on Navy planes, but the Argentia base picked up your radio? Wow...interesting, that's quite a bounce.

I've never been to NFLD, but I like those low mintages in their 20c coins!

Kurt, I just finished sorting the three boxes, and got a total of 13 Canadian cents. Two in the first box, three in the last, and the rest in the second. I have not checked any of the coins yet. Still tabulating what was there. The last box has 27 rolls of 2007, BU, and mirror finish.
It would be nice to locate several pounds of those NFLD coins!

Doubled dies??? Trails???? I was not aware there were anything like that! which ones were they? I'll look at the others I have, to see if I have the same thing. Nice find! They were the best I had of each date, and I wanted to give you a good number of serial datres to work with. The magnet helps determine which ones are steel, (if you don'e look at the MM, Sic).

The 2005 (Trails) and the 125 year centennial ones with the dates on the obverse. They are probably just hubbing problems and not real doubled dies, but the 5 looked interesting.

Coop, good eyes! I didn't look at any of them with the scope, or I might have sent you a note that there is more than meets the eye, but you beat me to it! I'll check the others, (one of these days) when I get caught up. Too mant 'irons in the fire, or, too many coins in the sorting rack". There are three boxes there, at this moment, and I have to count the different mints, and see which bank gave me the best returns for my time. One box has 27 rills of bright, almost a mirror finish, and they have only seen rolling machines, looks like. When I ask for more "P" boxes, I'll ask that that one be avoided! Those Canucks came with the three boxes of "P"'s.

Dick: They are very minor. It may even be part of the design on the 1952-2002 ones. I noticed on both examples only on one letter. I'll post images when I finish them. The trails is very minor, but the only coin I saw it on. It only affects the NW edges of Cent.

Coop, I'll bet this will get BJ's attention! It will give him that much more material to work with.
Like I said, they were the best of the lot, and I figured you might have some plans for them, beside placing into a folder, to complete a few missing dates.
