Hi, I'm Tery and I'm very new to posting and really do not have proper camera so I scanned this. I was sent here by coinforum, where this pic is located. I was told to put attn: to above....BJ?Even though it isn't a great pic, it speaks for itself. I'm seeking info on this coin and rarity. I'm still trying to understand the whole error/variety thing. So I appreciate all of your input

Thanks, Teryble

Hi Tery and welcome to the forum. I just put up an answer in another part of the forum (where the first post appeared), however, I can go back over it again now that it is in its proper place.

At first I was led to believe that it was on a Canadian cent, however, I believe this to be a Lincoln cent. Yes, it is a die anomaly that is called trails and a nice one at that. It is also one that I do not have listed and would be very interested in examining if you would send it down to Florida.

Without going into a very lengthy explanation, trails and also wavy steps (which are one in the same with the only difference being the direction that the trails travel in) are similar to a doubled die, however, due to the way the are formed and when they are formed, put them in a distinct different category. Yes, they are definitely worth keeping for they are a die anomaly.

Congratulations on a very nice find Tery.

I am in Sarasota Fl, where are you. After weeks of checking out my pennies, it's nice to know I found something. I still have alot to go through, but this gives me hope!
Thanks, Tery

Well Tery, you are a stone throw away. You are over in Chuck's (D) neighborhood while I am east of Orlando.

Would you consider putting that 1999 Lincoln trail die in the mail to me so that I can get it into my files?

What exactly is this process? If it is a discovery? Can you give me just a little insight as to what is the reason of sending it? Is it like a certification? Would there be a value put upon it?
Thanks so much for your interest.

Tery - Since this is a new trail die ( I am fairly sure that it is) a number will be assigned to it which will identify it for all to see who collect variety type coins. This way, if another is found, it can be identified by that number and the finder will know exactly what she or he has.

Analysis of the coin is called attribution and what the attributer does, is first, validates that the coin is what it is, in this a case a trail die. And secondly, looks for identifying die markers so that the die will not be mistaken for another similar one. Once this is done, the coin is photographed, showing both the anomaly and the die makers and then put into a file. If you look in the other section of this site, where you can find a particular die by putting in the year, the mint and whether it is on the obverse or reverse, this is a filing system.

Presently, I would estimate your coin to be valued at around $15.00 to $20.00, however that is just a guess from your picture. It maybe worth more or it maybe worth less.

As to the procedure, it is fairly simple. Just put it in an envelope (it should be in a plastic flip for some protection and in a sheet of paper for padding) and send it to me. I do not charge for attribution for I only do wavy steps and trail dies. When I have finished with your coin, I send it back with a statement to what I have found concerning that coin.

What this does, is validates your coin as a particular die and since you were the first to see this die, you will be listed as the discoverer in my files.

I hope that this answers your questions, but if you do have any more, I'll be happy to reply

Tery, since I'm the one who got you "into this mess", Allow me to set your mind at rest, concerning your coin, or any other coin, for that matter. Bob Piazza Is one of the attribritors for the site.
BJ is another, but he does the trails, and wavy steps area, (hence the name he chose: wavysteps2003). If he, or any other member, for that matter askes for a coin to be attributed, it is as safe as if you had it in your possession.
The owner of the forum, or site, is a recent arrival to your town, and you will meet him, sooner,or later, He is Chuck, or CD Daughtry. You will benefit from his efforts, as have all of the members here.
I was, or had been "lurking" in the canadian forum, and when I saw the trails, I lost contact with reality!
Dick
