I've been looking for these since about last August and have found 6 so far. Sold one; here are images of the other 5 in case anyone is curious.

I'd like to better understand what these transitional varieties are, but I cannot get to your pics. Confused

Agcollector, I am having the same problem qwith your photos. I assume one has to be a member of that forum. I would suggest an alternate database, Photobucket.com, maybe....

Second try at images. I think all the links work but are a pain to open one at a time. Sorry!

Hi KurtS,
The 1988 coin with the reverse of 1989 is similar to the 1992 with the reverse of 1993, i.e. 1992 "close AM" cents. There is a description of all the known reverse die varieties here:

http://www.varietyvista.com/lincoln_cent_RDV_changes.htm

if you scroll down to RDV-006 it indicates that it wasn't supposed to be introduced until 1989 yet a few were made in 1988.

AgCollector: Congratulations on your finds! That's super!

Is there any possibility of examining so as to photograph and document the die markers/pairings for my "C" files and illustration in my Die Variety News magazine?

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, ddorpm and Rhubarb!

ddorpm, I'd be happy to send them to you for inspection- just let me know what to do.

The latest issue of Billy Crawford's Die Variety News Magazine is out featuring an article on the 1988 transitional cents.

There is currently an active auction on eBay for a 1988 transitional cent being sold by Billy Crawford.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But I have to disagree with you about your statement, "... they aint (sic) no 92d close am's"

The 1992-D Close AM is a transitional variety created the same way as the 1988. To be more correct in terminology, the 1992-D is mated with the reverse style of '93 and IS a transitional variety type.

The same as the 1988 is mated with reverse style of '89, also a transitional variety type.

yeah...... i know.

i'm saying they're not as rare... didn't even think about debating the process in which they were made. but uh.. thanks.

i read about a guy that has something like 15 of these 88's.. a guy in this thread has 6... the one on ebay is up to $150 with 6 days left - ridiculous. too much hype... they aint no 92d close am's..
