I believe it was on the learning channel or maybe travel channel. I came upon it close to the end, but it was very interesting. Especially finding out how they dry the planchets after dipping them 3 times to rinse.......SOUNDWAVES! Seeing them place the planchets (in this case they were gold and platinum) in the ???? little holder to be pressed, 3 times for gold and 5 for Platinum. They also showed how a guy who is a machinist, making "novelty" error coins, washington on front & flying eagle on back. They were good! They also mentioned the counterfeiter who reproduced one of the most expensive coins (I don't remember, but it had a lady liberty on obverse and I think 2 eagles on reverse.) The guy was an excellent sculptor and made way to many & got cocky & put an Omego mark on it.
(His own signature.) He would have gotten away with it if he were not so greedy and make so many. They said they were so good they would not have been detected, except for his mark! When I have the extra time, I will take the Mint virtual tour. Seeing the process makes it easier to understand. Has anyone taken the "tour"?
Have a great weekend all.
Tery
