This is a 1795 Catherine II Russian 5 KOPEKS.
This little fellow is much larger than a US silver dollar and much heavier.
It is a nice AU piece, not usually seen this well preserved from this series as these did see heavy use.
She is in for a long oil soak and then will join the hoard.

Very nice coin! I did some quick research, trying to find out the actual size of this coin, where I read that the "E...M" stands for Ekaterinburg mint, a city named after Empress Catherine I and central to copper mining in the Urals. The E on the obverse denotes "Ekaterina".

I also find it interesting how the Tsarist coins bore elaborate initials of their monarchs--also a standard convention for many Scandinavian coins up to today. I have to wonder if that convention traveled west or east, but I'll guess the latter due to earlier Viking influence and the elaborate scrolling which often typified their art, which I suspect was initially a Celtic influence. Possibly more trivia than you need to know... Laughing

Thanks for the info Kurt. I am an info freak...the more the better, so please always feel free to share.
I will leave this in mineral oil for at least 3-4 months errorfinder, than pull her out and look at her. Chances are she will go back in the oil for at least another round.
