How about congratulations!!!! You do indeed have a nice class 6 doubled die reverse there, and for the date, it looks to be in exceptional condition. You may want to check it with this one on the site. If they are not the same, you might have a newly discovered variety.

Carol, the site is the most available place you can go to check. You might not get a response from a member for several hours, (that will be the day!), but the site is always there!
Cingratulations on a nice, maybe even new, find!
Dick

Keep it up!

Looks like you are on a roll of luck.

It always seems like once you find something then you will find a bunch more. I think it's the motivation gained from finding that keeps us looking.

Very Happy

Whoa paint!!

How was I that I said you were going about this backwards and made you abandon using the data guide??

I think this may possibly be in reference to one of two things:

1. If you are looking at the markers on the site and trying to make them match on coins, then calling the coins die varieties because the markers somewhat match, then that's backwards. Find the die variety first, THEN use the markers to help identify it.

2. If you are only looking for the varieties listed on the site, you're shooting yourself in the foot from ever finding anything we wither don't have listed yet, or something that has never been discovered.

In either case, the following should greatly help you sort and look through batches of coins.

Steps to follow in order:

1. Sort the coins by date. most important you do this first, because it will put coins of like dates together. This helps you compare a number of examples of a given date to figure out which ones are 'odd' and focus your attention on those that are odd.

2. Look through the coins date for date trying to find anything out of the usual that loos like doubling. Set those coins aside and keep looking until you've made it through your batch.

3. When you're finished, take the coins that look odd, and try to match the doubling to something on the site. If you see something that matches, THEN use the marker photos to try matching the coin to the die. There are a number of cases in Lincoln cents where the markers are essential in differentiating between dies.

4. If the doubling and markers match, you can label your coin and be happy you've found something to fill another hole in the collection. If they don't match, come here for answers and see if we can help.

Usually by this point you will have the varieties separated from the junk, and the known varieties separated from the unknown varieties. The unknown varieties can be sent in for attribution and added to the site. Done.

I hope this helps.

Every thing you write and I read helps .I have been sorting my coins by dates for about 30 years now ,but never looked for such specific varieties until Dick showed me your site.I have always been an error nut.Anyway concerning this 29 ,here are clearer pics of entire coin and a couple of pics that copy what is on the date guide and it does not seem the same .Especially the vdb.

It appear's that your scratches are similar to the one on the site. The VDB on your coin is much stronger . The VDB will be in the bust in the same place for this year. Nice find

okay this is a hard question for me to word correctly-a disclaimer-It seems to me that the area of the site coin is thicker below the vdb.would that have nothing to do with the die?Knowing what is done by the die itself and what can be just the effect of the minting process is hard for me.

Carol,
In reality, the VDB has nothing to do with your coin being attributed as one die or another. It is not a marker and is on all coins for the date. We are trying to verify the variety which is the reverse. Die state, common wear and tear, and possible changed dies have a lot to do with verification. The coin on the site is circulated as well, so the devices being thicker may be a circulation issue. Since the one on the site lists no specific markers, the only way to possibly verify if these two coins are the same variety is with overlays, or visual matching such as the shape and direction of the dots, and devices. Off hand, using just your pics and the ones on the site, I would say they are the same die.
