As read on that auction:
| Quote: |
| An absolutely original 50-coin roll of Uncirculated 1902 Indian cents. This roll was stored, presumably for a century or so, in a brown-paper wrapper, stashed in drawer of a roll-top desk. The paper surrounding the coins simply "disintegrated with age" but did retain sufficient tensile strength not to allow the coins to shake out. All but two or three of coins retain 75% or so of their original mint-red color. |
If you ask me, that's quite a yarn...and it takes a real leap of blind trust to believe those loose coins were part of an "original roll."--if that existed in 1902, I don't know for sure.
$25 a coin...that might be OK, but it's like you said--if they're not messed with. More likely scenario--they are messed with, and that tale was spun as a smoke screen to divert scrutiny on every single coin. As it stands, somebody paid over $1200 for IHCs little better than sight-unseen. Seems crazy to me.

I think the coins were most likely messed with. He got almost $1300, but he also could have gotten that much if he left the "original roll" intact.
Some have serious carbon spots. One of the coins, second from the left, bottom row, has a shadow of the portrait to the left that indicates that it might have been cleaned.
There is a purple coin in one of the photos that only occurs on proof indians, that was probably subjected to heat or chemicals. Someone is going to be very upset at some point.

Just running thru the pictures, does not tell me much. The one " full-face, does have a nice liberty in view, but! I would NOT pay that much for any rolls. I get hurt bad enough just pagint$1.95/ coin. Not all have been that high priced, but it was the highest I have paid. Oh we,ll, I don't plan on taking them with me, so no need to be sure I got the best available!
What id s that old sayin, "there is a Sucker born every minute, and two, out to get him"!
