Here's another coin I found at a shop the other day. I especially like how the copper tones on these coins, but I have a difficult time finding them uncleaned. This is a common one, but it's a nice grade to photograph. Very Happy

I really like the design of the 5 on their design. Nice to see a nice touch instead of a plain one. It adds a touch of pizzazz. (Had to look up this word. No doubt the only word with that many Z's in it.)

Me too...there's something anachronistic about the design and lettering. It feels more 19 C. than US coins of this period. I also wonder how much of the reverse design was punched independently, as the angles and baselines of each letter/numeral drift a bit. I'll need to compare this to my other examples.

The second 1 on the date looks higher than the first, so they may have punched that by hand. But still a nice example. I love those 5's. Surprised Surprised Surprised

Kurt, we are going to have to face it! The "hand-craftmanship" of old, is a thing of the past. Now the 'bots, and computers do it all. I remember reading about 75 years ago, of the time when the computers took over, and wanted to destroy the human race, but they still had the programming intacrt, that the humans were to be protected. I guess they are still trying to figure that one out!

Dick,
On the subject of technology, I'm not too worried about a "souless machine" taking over because the infrastructure for that sort of control would require a level of complexity/overhead that would be its own undoing. Even the Web will soon reveal its fragility, due to limits of bandwidth vs. users and growing consumption by media uses. Too much reliance is already placed on this medium, which will turn around and bite us--imo. Embarassed

Then someday, due to natural or man-made disaster...technology will come crashing down, and knowledge will be lost forever due to attrition of digital storage mediums. Then we'll be back to "square one"--hammering basic tools from scrap metal from the rubbish heap of history. Rolling Eyes

Kurt, there are times when I wonder how many civilizations, equal to, or even more advanced, have flourished on this (presently) green earth? There has been a lot of time for that to have happened, and thru the seemingly lack of learning from our mistakes, we keep "walking down that same path"! Who knows if there was one (civilization) that actually did escape our natural tendency to destroy ourselves, messing with things we barely, "if at all, understand"? Maybe they are the "UFO's" that frequently are seen, checking to see if we have learned anything, yet! My impression of their conclusion is, "Not yet! They have a long way to go, before we can help them"!
Now for some info on my progress: The light studio,(?) is built, but has a lot to go before I can start shooting some test shots. I still need to "gather" a couple parts, for the wiring, and then I'll have better control over the lighting. Once that is finished, then comes the big chore, learning to use the new camera! it has more controls on it, that a dog has fleas!
I'll get it, though! This "Dutchman" don't know what the word "quit" means! Meanwhile, stay warm, and enjoy what Mother Nature has prepared for us!

Dick, yes, an an interesting topic for sure! Very Happy

Here are three more coins I photographed yesterday:

I find the last particularly interesting how both halves of the date are on distinctly different baselines. Whether this is artistic license to correlate to design elements or simply a mistake, I'll need to check other examples of this coin for a comparison:
