Thanks to another collector showing me an example of this variety, because it came to mind at a dealer today when I noticed this coin.
Not all overdates are so distinct where you can see large portions of the underlying digit as on this 1939/6. Just compare this to the 1858/7 Flying Eagle cent! Since the previous year this coin was produced was 1936, I'll assume that's the reason for this particular overdate.
Initially, I thought this "overdate" was caused by a double hubbing of two different dates. But an Icelandic collector friend had this to say:
| Quote: |
| ...the reason why the 9 in 39 is diffrent from the first 9 is becauce the Copenhagen mint in Denmark produced a bunch of die's without the last two digit's of the date and when it came time to strike more coins they engraved the last two digits for the year that they resume production. you will see this with all the coins denmark minted for Iceland between 1922-1940. and in the later half of 1940 or somewhere about, England's Royal mint took over and the coin dates was much more consistant and uniform in apprearance. |

Kurt, that is a real nice coin! the overdate is very plain. I thought it might be a 9/5, but checked the other 9, and figured if it was up-side -down, it woulg work very well as a "6".

Thanks! I really like overdate, even if it's a bit obscure--not sure it will ever fetch a high price on Heritage auctions
