Here's a detail from another coin I found at the show. Obviously, it exhibits some classic notching typical to doubled dies, but with something extra (arrows)--but what exactly is that?

Here's another group of pics which show more details--very nice doubling on the date!
In terms of the doubling, this doesn't appear to a be simple rotation--is it offset or something else?
I'm trying to learn the differences, and I need a good reference.
I really like the color of this coin--the photo is an accurate representation.

Kurt, Steven beat me to it,but, yes I to, believe they are trails. I hadn't considered the date, other that with reference to its condition, wear-wise. As he said, it would be the oldest so far, and it goes without saying that ttrails aren't necessarily unique to the US, and "Grayside" coinage. Nice coin!

Thanks everyone for your input!
I forgot to note here--it's pretty interesting how the date was obviously on the hub, and not added later? I first thought it was an RPD until I saw similar doubling on the devices. I think this coin may be struck in the Birmingham/Heaton mint because of the "H" on the other side and the overall look reminds me of that mint's work.
Regarding those marks on REPU, yes...I had a similar thought when I saw them. Perhaps BJNeff or Chuck can lend their expertise here? It certainly would be interesting this coin marks the earliest known case.

Where do you find this stuff Kurt? Or is that a trade secret?

Looks like trails to me too. Let me direct BJ Neff to this thread to see what he says also.

GarryN Just shops and shows--in plain view. Well, I guess I might look a bit harder than some collectors--and sometimes the details just pop. Die varieties are most of all I collect anymore.
I found a few more things at the last show which I'll post later, including an IHC that seems to have been dated with a broken digit punch. Not sure if Snow has catalogued it yet.

It sure does look like trails to me. If it is trails, it presents some interesting information on when these anomalies are created.
Of course, one of us (Chuck, Bob or myself) would have to see the actual coin toverify if it is trails.

BJ Neff,
How interesting! Very cool if this is the earliest known example...
I'll be happy to send this coin your way for confirmation.
I'll send you an email to get your shipping info.
I have all the photos I need for now, so this will go out on my next ship day.
Thanks,
Kurt

Hi Kurt,
My shipping address is not on that site but it is on the CONECA site. Instead of looking it up though, here it is

Thanks Kurt for letting me look at this coin.

Well, the hub doubling on this coin is unmistakably class 5, pivoted hub doubling.
The trails...looks like it to me, but trails are unrelated to doubled dies, so there are two different things going on with this coin.

Thanks Chuck for the info...I cannot often tell the differences between the hub doubling types. I need to get myself a better reference.
