Here's a 1902 1 ore I found today, where I spotted something in the 9 under my loupe. The date is very small, but under my scopes there appears to be remnants of an 8 under the 9. Since a 1902/802 is listed, I think that's what I found. Very Happy

This coin is really nice--an EF easily with traces of luster. Here's detail from the crown:

Kurt, I have to agree, again! It sure looks like an "8" under the "9". Now for a question: Do you shoot the enture coin, and then "work the image over, to get the details you want to show? I ahven't gone that way, but then I dion't do more than just shoot the image, and post, untouched. maybe I should. Opinion?

Dick, I've found the best way to study overdates is by shooting under several lighting angles and see what appears. This can be overdone if you're looking for something to "fit", so I'm looking for consistency under several angles. My QX5 captured the 19/8 and 02 separately, so I picked the best ones and arranged as seen here. Otherwise, I didn't use any techniques to bring out detail...other than adjust contrast. I wish the pics were sharper, but that's the best the QX5 can manage. Very Happy

Kurt, I have the QX3, and have modified it a bit to get more light, but It still leaves much to be desired. I should work a lot more with the photography side, to become more efficient, but that takes time away from the coins! just kidding. I have to learrn so much about photography, primarily the camera. I know what I am seeing, but many times I can't portray the same image to others. My QX3 has a removable base that I can place on my stereo-zoom scope, and use the focus on it for the camera.
Maybe you can show the QX5, to see what it is, and maybe I'll see about doing some changing of cameras. I am dissapointed with the Canon powershot, because I can't take the pjotos i want to take, unless it is on "auto".
Btw, What country was that, or those 1905 coins from, the ones with ther DDO?

Thats a real nice overdate, Kurt.

I had a QX3 and gave up on it. It didnt work on copper, I got some nice photos of silver, but only super close photos. Its not good for taking pictures of an entire coin. Now that I have a digital camera, I can do some of both.

Dick, which coins are you talking about--the Belgium overdates? My QX5 is the standard model. It works OK in many cases, although focus and contrast controls leave much to be desired.

Kurt, right, the ones from "Belgium". I didn't recognize the ends of the design, protruding into the photo.. I have never seen a QX5, so that was the reason for a picture of it. Like I said I have the QX3, and precisely due to the focus asdjustment being so rough, i modified it. Actually made a do-nut ring, that fits into the ring that holds the head of my QXz scope. Now I have nice focus control. This is what i did:

The shape of the "scope has a small outer, rounded, area that serves to make it more stable. The base of the rinf juyst fits inside the mounting ring on the base. Dependiong on your setup, it might help the "focus" for you, as well.

Dick, well done with that focus adaption for the QX3! Very Happy
The QX5 has the same basic exterior (and crude focus). I've heard the electronics are upgraded? In any case, yours seems to work just as well as mine.

Kurt, i did a bit more to mine. I cut away all the plastic in the lens area, to allow a lot more light. it isn't perfect, but it definitely is an improvement! One day, I might open yp the scope, and see if I hade a lens assy, thast will fit in the place og the smallest magnification. If that works, maybe a whole coin shot would be possible. I heve several different ones, all about the same size, physically. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"!

Here is a coin I've been wanting to post as it is right up Kurt's alley.

Over denomination and date it was changed. Things must have been tough that year to re-use older coins that way?
