Nice coin, never seen one from there before...as for a good treatment for the spots, the only two things I would recommend is a soak in pure mineral oil or a soak in some Goo-Gone; neither of which is very likely to help much, but it would be worth a try. Neither would change the color of the surface of the coin (including the spot) but would neutralize the contaminant to keep it from spreading too badly. Both substances are available at a local Wal-Mart or other store - the mineral oil in the pharmacy area and the Goo-Gone in the cleaner section.

As for the credit on the Goo-Gone, I owe tht to Bob P. He brought that one to my attention - it has worked wonders on removing the black crap you see around the devices on circ coins.

Nice coin! I don't have one of those ether.

That symbol with the yin/yang and the various geometric shapes is also on their flag.

Thanks Rich. I am glad you liked the pics.
As far as the goo-gone thingy, I discovered it quite by accident. I was looking for something to remove the sticky gunk on most older coins. I tried many things on some old coins, but they either removed the patina, or scratched the coin. You can rest assured that I did extensive testing with the goo-gone over the course of a year. It works great and does not affect the coin at all, with the exception of softening and removing the gunk.

Any idea what the active ingredient(s) are in Goo-Gone?

It's basically an orange oil cleaner, smells like oranges.

Thanks for the interesting coin pic and for the goo-gone tip. I'll have to give that a try.
