- On March 23rd, mafia boss Carlo Gambino is arrested for plotting to steal $3 million.
- On April 9th, Paul McCartney announces the official break-up of the Beatles.
- On April 13th, an oxygen tank explodes on Apollo 13, preventing a planned moon landing and jeopardizing the lives of the three-man crew.
- In 1970 Las Vegas casino Coin Castle opens. The casino, one of many, attracts millions of people to Las Vegas deals, hotels and other attractions.
Specific notes about this year's cents...
- 1970 San Francisco minted cents are known in two different date sizes. Arguably the toughest of all small/large date pairs to detect, one simple rule will sort them in a failsafe manner. read here for more.
- The San Francisco mintmark tends to be filled with humps and bumps this year. They are often mistakenly identified as repunched mintmarks.
- A large number of doubled dies involving modified hubs exist this year. They show as often thin and weak bars above and below the cross bar of the 7 of the date.
