1979
this year in history...
- On January 29th, President Jimmy Carter commutes the sentence of Patty Hearst.
- A major accident occurs at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear power plant on March 28th
Specific notes about this year's cents...
- This year's D mint cents are known to have a flaw on the mintmark. It seems that most of the dies were punched with a faulty (broken) mintmark punch that exhibits a split in the lower serif. To read more about this anomaly and see a photo of it, click here.
- 1979 business strike cents are very scarce in high grades. Any certified grade above MS66 will command a very high premium. Some of this has to do with die overuse, but the majority of it has to do with problems with the cents blotching to brown prematurely.
